\"Sauvignon<\/a><\/p>\n

1<\/span>\u00a0 | \u00a0It\u2019s not all Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough.<\/h4>\n

While 58 percent of all wine produced in New Zealand is Sauvignon Blanc (and 85 percent of Marlborough\u2019s output is Sauvignon Blanc) and it\u2019s been the country\u2019s flagship variety since the \u201890s, many varieties of wine are produced all over New Zealand \u2013 from its northern tip (Northland) to its southern reaches (Central Otago \u2013 the world\u2019s southern-most wine region). The other predominant white wine you don\u2019t hear much about is Chardonnay, and yet during the \u201890s and early 2000s, plantings of this variety exceeded those of every grape. Not to mention, they\u2019ve been making Riesling in New Zealand since the first Europeans arrived.<\/p>\n

\"Wine<\/a><\/p>\n

2<\/span>\u00a0 | \u00a0Wine lovers make up a large portion of all New Zealand\u2019s visitors.<\/h4>\n

Last year, 25 percent of the 3.4 million international visitors to New Zealand spent at least part of their stay in a wine region (up from 13 percent four years prior). Tourism experts believe this is partly because the country is so small that international tourists can cover numerous wine regions during their stay. In fact, all 10 of the country\u2019s wine regions are easy to reach from major city centres, have many accommodation options \u2013 from budget to high-end \u2013 and offer some of the country\u2019s most-awarded restaurants.<\/p>\n

\"Gibbston<\/a><\/p>\n

3<\/span>\u00a0 | \u00a0The world\u2019s best Pinot Noir comes from here.<\/h4>\n

People told innovative winemaker Alan Brady the region just outside Queenstown (Central Otago) was too cold for Pinot Noir. A few years later, he produced the greatest Pinot Noir on Earth \u2013 his 2000\u00a0Gibbston Valley Reserve Pinot Noir<\/em>\u00a0was the first ever non-French wine to win the illustrious\u00a0Gold Medal Trophy<\/em>\u00a0for Pinot Noir\/ Burgundy<\/em>\u00a0at the\u00a0London International Wine Challenge<\/em>. Now, Central Otago is considered one of the world\u2019s top three Pinot Noir producing areas \u2013 75 percent of all wine grown here is Pinot Noir; no other region in New Zealand has devoted such a large share of its wine production to a single grape variety. You won\u2019t find a bottle for less than $40 NZD ($25 USD).<\/p>\n

\"Hawke's<\/a><\/p>\n

4<\/span>\u00a0 | \u00a0New Zealand produces rich, robust Reds.<\/h4>\n

You probably haven\u2019t heard about the country\u2019s heavier reds because all the talk is about Sauvignon Blancs or Pinot Noirs. But there\u2019s a region in New Zealand famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah that\u2019s the country\u2019s oldest wine growing region with vines dating back to the 1800s. Hawke\u2019s Bay on New Zealand\u2019s North Island produces 82 percent of all Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah in New Zealand \u2013 in a region which shares a similar climate to the Mediterranean. And because it\u2019s warmer here, you should rent a bicycle and ride the more than 120 miles of cycling trails linking the wineries, all set beside the region\u2019s main town, Napier, which is UNESCO-World-Heritage listed for its 140 Art Deco buildings built during the 1930s.<\/p>\n

\"Villa<\/a><\/p>\n

5<\/span>\u00a0 | \u00a0You don\u2019t have to go far from Auckland Airport.<\/h4>\n

While undulating landscapes peppered with snow-capped mountains and winding rivers is how you might picture New Zealand\u2019s wine regions, one of New Zealand\u2019s most famous brands is just five minutes away from where you\u2019ll land at Auckland\u2019s International Airport.\u00a0Villa Maria Estate<\/em>\u00a0is New Zealand\u2019s most awarded winery, so you can enjoy a gourmet lunch on a sun-drenched terrace overlooking its famous grapes as soon as you get off your flight. Auckland has plenty of wine touring options available \u2013 though its most unique (and picturesque) wine region can be accessed by a 40-minute ferry ride through its city harbour to Waiheke Island.<\/p>\n

\"Kawarau<\/a><\/p>\n

6<\/span>\u00a0 | \u00a0Where else can you bungy jump between tastings?<\/h4>\n

The Central Otago wine region is in the heart of the adventure capital of the world. The Queenstown region was where jet boating and bungy jumping was invented. When at the region\u2019s top-rated winery,\u00a0Gibbston Valley Wines<\/em>, simply cross the road to take a 141-foot jump off the Kawarau Bridge \u2013 the site of the world\u2019s first bungy jump. The rivers which run beneath the wineries, built high atop the region\u2019s mountainous landscape, can be traversed by high-speed jet boat, and there are three ski resorts all within a 45-minute drive. Tandem paragliding was also invented here, and there\u2019s sky diving, mountain biking, hang gliding and more.<\/p>\n

\"Classic<\/a><\/p>\n

7<\/span>\u00a0 | \u00a0Follow the country\u2019s most famous wine trail across the ocean.<\/h4>\n

The Classic New Zealand Wine Trail<\/em>\u00a0is one of the world\u2019s most iconic self-drive wine journeys. It covers over 300 miles, takes in three of the country\u2019s best-known wine regions, and requires you drive your car onto a ferry that will take you across the strait separating the North and South Islands. Starting in Hawke\u2019s Bay, you\u2019ll drive south to the Wairarapa region famed for its Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, before stopping off in New Zealand\u2019s capital, Wellington \u2013 home of New Zealand\u2019s best restaurants, bars, theatres and cafes. Then you\u2019ll finish off amongst the world\u2019s most awarded Sauvignon Blanc wineries in Marlborough.<\/p>\n

\"Wairarapa<\/a><\/p>\n

8<\/span>\u00a0 | \u00a0You can drink wine in Middle Earth.<\/h4>\n

Okay, so we all know New Zealand was the setting for\u00a0The<\/em>\u00a0Lord of The Rings<\/em>\u00a0trilogy and\u00a0The Hobbit<\/em>.
