Route
Day 1 - Whitehorse
Upon arrival in Whitehorse, a free shuttle bus will take you to your hotel. Take advantage of the rest of the day to explore Yukon’s capital city, home to nearly three-quarters of the territory’s population (approximately 25,000 people). It was founded in 1893 when thousands of prospectors decided to build a stopover town on the road to the Klondike goldfields.
It offers the best of both worlds: a wilderness environment all around the town and in the center, all the services and amenities of a modern city. Whitehorse is surrounded by a network of hiking trails and parks on the banks of the Yukon River. In the evening, your Northern Tales Travel Services guide will pick you up at your hotel for your first opportunity to see the dancing waves of color painted in the sky… your first Northern Lights viewing excursion!
Day 2 - Whitehorse
Free day in Whitehorse. Discover this northern city and its surroundings at your own pace. For example, explore the heritage of the First Nations of the Whitehorse region, starting with a visit to the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre. This remarkable cedar building is located on the banks of the Yukon River. Come in to view the exhibits and meet the welcoming staff. Nearby, the MacBride Museum also has a permanent exhibit of beadwork, tools and artifacts from First Nations in other parts of the Yukon.
Stroll through the streets of the town and you will easily find large murals and other works of art depicting First Nations legends, as well as the famous hand-carved healing totem pole with a raven on top. Or visit the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, the place to see and photograph Yukon wildlife. A dozen local species are present. The 2.8 km² property includes a wildlife research and rehabilitation center. In the evening, enjoy your second Northern Lights viewing excursion. Accommodations in Whitehorse.
Day 3 and 4 - Whitehorse - Dawson City
Take a complimentary shuttle bus to Whitehorse Airport and then board your morning flight to Dawson City, where you will meet a Husky Bus Transportation representative on arrival who will take you to your hotel. Over the next two days, your Klondike Experience / Husky Bus Transportation guide will take you on several guided tours of Dawson City and the surrounding area, allowing you to relive the Gold Rush era! Many of the original buildings have stood the test of time, while others have been restored to faithfully reflect their former grandeur or rustic sturdiness.
See Dawson City’s historic sites, but also the surrounding gold fields that still embody the “Spirit of 1898” of the Klondike; take a tour of the Dawson City Museum, as well as a walking tour through the streets of Dawson City. In addition, each evening will include a guided tour to find the best vantage points to enjoy the Northern Lights.
Accommodation: Dawson City for 2 nights
Day 5 - Dawson City - Whitehorse
After a leisurely morning in Dawson City, you are transferred to the airport for your flight back to Whitehorse. Upon arrival in Whitehorse, take the complimentary shuttle to your accommodation. The rest of the day is free to explore the city and its surroundings. For example, treat yourself to a relaxing session at the Takhini Hot Pools($). The Takhini Hot Pools have been known and used for over 100 years.
In the boreal forest of the Yukon, 25 minutes northwest of Whitehorse, Takhini Hot Pools drain into the interior of the earth at a rate of 385 liters per minute and 47ºC all year round. Rich in calcium, magnesium and iron, these natural mineral springs do not have the sulphurous odour common to many springs. From the baths, you enjoy a magnificent view of the mountains. Funny thing, every year the “International Hair Freezing Contest” is held here. The goal of the contest is to create the most creative ice hairstyles possible!
