You will be surprised to learn that there are actually 1865 of them, and that to be counted, the island must be above water 365 days a year, and have at least 1 tree!

Day 2: Gananoque - Toronto

Take the road towards the city of Toronto. Drive along the Saint Lawrence River to Toronto. On the way, don’t hesitate to stop in Prince Edward County, which was elected “Ontario’s Capital of Gastronomy” and is also an interesting wine region of Canada. It is the perfect place to have lunch, and enjoy the beautiful white sandy beaches of Sandbanks Provincial Park.

Once you arrive in Toronto, head back to your downtown hotel. Use your first evening to start discovering the huge metropolis.

Day 3: Toronto

Cosmopolitan, active, multicultural, the “Queen City” looks like a small Manhattan with its tall glass and steel buildings. The 553-metre high CN Tower is the symbol of the city. Its 6 glass lifts take you in less than a minute to the first floor, at 346 metres high, which offers an incredible panoramic view.

A little further east, the Distillery District is a vibrant part of the metropolis, so be sure to stop by the Saint Lawrence Market, where you will find delicious local delicacies for lunch.

In the afternoon, take a stroll along the shores of Lake Ontario, or take a trip to the islands seen from the harbour, which are linked to the city centre by regular ferries. In summer, the islands are popular with city dwellers and offer a wide range of activities, from tree-lined parks and beaches to biking and tandem biking, all of which offer spectacular views of the city.

Day 4: Toronto / Niagara Falls

Start your adventure with the first natural wonder: Niagara Falls. You can approach this natural wonder on the Hornblower cruise, or from the cliffs, discover the tunnels carved into the rock and offer a unique view of the site.

If you are staying there tonight, take the opportunity to see the incredible light show that takes place every day, as well as the fireworks that are fired at weekends during the summer season, it is an incredible show that will leave you with many beautiful memories.

Day 5: Niagara Falls / Tobermory

It’s time to leave the magnificent Niagara Falls and head for Tobermory, at the entrance to the beautiful Bruce Peninsula. Look out for the small piles of stone that resemble a human form on the roadside; these are Inunchuks, an Indian tradition meaning ‘where the man has gone’.

You have the possibility to stop in the heart of the park, to discover a breathtaking landscape! Splendid limestone cliffs await you, dominating Lake Huron, which spreads its beautiful turquoise colour as far as the eye can see. Hiking trails will lead you through large forests, home to black bears and rare reptiles, nestled between the rock and wetland of the coastal park.

Day 6: Tobermory / Manitoulin Island

Take time this morning to explore the peninsula further before joining the ferry to the other side of the bay on Manitoulin Island, the largest freshwater island in the world. Here you will discover a wilderness that beckons adventure on hiking trails that take you up huge limestone cliffs.

You can also choose to walk to the harbour of Gore Bay, the second largest community on the island with a year-round population of 900, before continuing west to Meldrum Bay, a charming traditional village and former fishing and logging centre on the shores of Lake Huron. To the south of the island, at the former seaside resort of Providence Bay, you can also enjoy a pleasant boardwalk along the beautiful sandy beach.

Visit one of the five Native American reserves to learn more about First Nations culture. Visit the M’Chigeeng village, for example, where you can learn about local crafts and their unusual teepee church, a representation of the campfire and the circle of life.

A geographical wonder, the island has over 100 lakes, including Lake Manitou, the largest island lake on the planet. With all this fresh water, it’s no wonder Manitoulin offers so much boating, fishing and scuba diving. If you prefer to stay on land, the Assininack Museum, Little Current- Howland Museum and Mississagi Lighthouse Museum have retained their old-world feel.
